KIDNEY HEALTH
WHAT IS KIDNEY DIALYSIS?
Kidney dialysis is a treatment that helps your body filter out waste and excess fluids when your kidneys can no longer do it on their own. It is a safe and routine procedure carried out by trained medical professionals, typically done several times a week at a dialysis centre near you.
During each session, your blood is gently circulated through a dialysis machine, which acts as an artificial kidney to remove toxins and balance essential minerals in your body.

Starting dialysis may feel overwhelming at first, but many patients quickly adjust to the routine and continue to lead active, fulfilling lives. With the right support, regular treatment, and proper self-care, dialysis can effectively manage kidney failure and significantly improve your overall quality of life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)
KIDNEY DIALYSIS QUESTIONS ANSWERED
What happens in a dialysis centre?
In haemodialysis, a filtering machine called a dialyzer removes waste and excess fluid from your blood before returning the cleaned blood back into your body. Before your first treatment, a minor surgical procedure is done to create a vascular access point, usually in your arm, which allows blood to flow in and out of the machine efficiently.
Each session is carried out by trained nurses and medical staff in a comfortable, supervised environment. The process typically takes 3 to 4 hours per session, during which most patients rest, read, or watch television.
How many times a week do I need dialysis?
Most haemodialysis patients attend a dialysis centre 3 times a week on a fixed schedule, such as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Each session usually lasts between 3 to 5 hours depending on your body size, kidney condition, and the amount of waste that needs to be filtered.
Missing or skipping sessions can lead to a build-up of toxins and fluid in the body, so consistency is important. Your nephrologist will determine the treatment schedule that best suits your health needs and lifestyle.
Is kidney dialysis painful?
Dialysis itself is generally not painful. Some patients may feel mild discomfort during the insertion of needles at the start of each session, but this typically subsides within a few minutes once treatment begins. A small number of patients may experience muscle cramps or a drop in blood pressure during the session, but these side effects are manageable and monitored closely by the nursing team.
Most patients are able to read, watch television, or rest comfortably throughout their treatment without significant discomfort.
Can a person live 20 years on dialysis?
Yes, it is entirely possible to live 20 years or more on dialysis. While the average lifespan for dialysis patients is generally cited as 5 to 10 years, this figure is often influenced by the age of patients when they begin treatment and the presence of other serious health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.
Younger patients who begin dialysis in good overall health and maintain a disciplined lifestyle, including following dietary guidelines and attending all scheduled sessions, have a strong chance of living well beyond that average range.
Can kidneys recover after dialysis?
In some cases, yes. A small number of patients, particularly those placed on dialysis due to acute kidney injury rather than chronic or end-stage kidney failure, may see their kidney function gradually recover over time and eventually be able to stop dialysis treatment altogether.
However, for patients diagnosed with end-stage renal failure, the kidney damage is typically permanent and dialysis becomes a lifelong treatment. Close and regular monitoring by your nephrologist is important to assess kidney function and determine whether dialysis can be reduced or withdrawn safely.
What foods should I avoid if I have kidney disease?
Patients with kidney disease are generally advised to limit foods that are high in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus, as damaged kidneys struggle to filter excess amounts of these minerals from the body. Common foods to reduce or avoid include processed and packaged foods, bananas, oranges, potatoes, dairy products, nuts, and dark-coloured soft drinks.
Fluid intake may also need to be monitored depending on the stage of kidney disease. Since dietary needs vary from person to person, it is always best to consult a registered dietitian who specialises in renal nutrition for a personalised meal plan.
How much does dialysis cost in Malaysia?
Dialysis costs in Malaysia vary depending on whether you attend a government hospital, an NGO-subsidised centre, or a private dialysis centre. At government facilities, dialysis is heavily subsidised for eligible patients. Private haemodialysis sessions typically range from RM80 to RM250 per session, which can add up significantly given the frequency of treatment required each week.
Financial aid, subsidies, and assistance programmes may be available to help reduce the cost burden for eligible patients. Contact Gedung Penawar Sdn. Bhd. to find out more about the financial assistance options available to you.
